What I Learned After College

I haven’t done a real reflection post in a while and thought that this was the perfect time to do one. I want to share the lessons I learned AFTER college was over and done with. These are some lessons that truly changed my perspective and life for the better.

Not Everyone Is Your Friend

I learned this both in and out of college. I’ve had many friendships that have ended over the years that I thought would last for a lifetime. You’re not going to get along with everyone and shouldn’t expect people to appreciate your friendship the way you do. You’re two different people that have different backgrounds and experiences.

Those experiences shape you into who you are and how you relate which may mean you clash and that’s okay. The important thing is finding those people who you don’t constantly clash with that are your biggest fans and vice versa. Those people who will have your back through it all.

I can proudly say I’ve found that in my two best friends, Veronica and Raquel. I feel sufficient with them being my only two real friends and am blessed to have them in my life.

Your Job Will Be Different Than Your Degree

I heard that this happens, but I didn’t think it would be me. I ended up getting my first real job in insurance and my current job is in collections. That is completely different than advertising, but strangely I’m okay with this. I feel like I ended up where I needed to be and the convenience of my job to my apartment also helps.

I still hate that I worked so hard for my degree to not even do anything with it. All I have is to say I have an education. At times it feels like a waste of money when I see how much my student loans are and how I’m not making ads. Honestly, I don’t think I would have been happy in advertising anyway so it worked out.

Life Happens After College

I thought that because my college experience wasn’t the best that I was doomed for life. To my surprise, it has been the complete opposite. Don’t get me wrong it hasn’t been all rainbows and butterflies, but it has definitely been better than college.

I don’t deal with bullying anymore and finally, have the independence I dreamed of having in school. I’m starting to figure out what I like and have actual hobbies. It’s way better than going to class and then back to my room trying to make friends with people who don’t care about me.

I have even traveled more than I did in school, but I could use some more travel in my life. I’m still successful and beating the odds. I’m finally getting my emotional and mental health together to where I control it instead of the other way around. I definitely like how things are starting to go regardless of the mistakes I may make along the way.

You Won’t Meet The Love Of Your Life Right Away

This was a hard one because I’ve always longed to be in a relationship and get married someday. I just got out of my first real relationship for the better and realize now that it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.

I ‘ve gotten comfortable with being by myself because being in a verbally, emotionally abusive relationship is not worth my wellbeing. We had good times,  but the bad outweighed them. I finally see that it’s important to take your time to get to know someone and not rush the process.

You’ll probably date quite a few people before you find the one and that is okay. There is no law that says you have to date one person for the rest of your life out of obligation when it’s unhealthy for you. I also don’t need to be married right now or ever to feel complete. I’m my own person and bring something unique to the table and he should too. We don’t have to be each other’s half to make a whole. We need to already be whole to come together in a relationship that will last.

You Should Date You

This is so so so important. It was the biggest and best lessons I could have ever learned. It kind of goes with the whole relationship piece. It’s important to get to know who you really are and want to be. It’s not going to be linear, but it helps to have somewhat of an idea of who you are and where you’re going.

I’m currently dating myself by figuring out what makes me happy, what I like to do, and how to enjoy my own company. I’m finding out that I don’t need a man or anyone else to make me feel whole and love myself. Looking back at my past, I can tell that’s what was missing from the equation. The way I allowed people to treat me and how I treated myself showed that there was a lack of love and confidence.

I’m happy to say that I’m learning to love me and gaining confidence every day. I’m taking care of myself in a holistic way. Let me tell you it feels great! Don’t get me wrong we all need connection, but you shouldn’t be dependent on the connection. Interdependency is the goal and I’m getting closer and closer every day.

These are important lessons I learned after college that is helping me get through life as we speak. Of course, this is just a smaller segment of a larger picture but still has just as much value.

Through the mistakes, heartbreak, and good times I’ve come to realize that life isn’t linear and stops for no one. You have to grab it by the horns and make it instead of it making you. The great thing about life is that you never stop learning.

So I’ll continue to learn and be resilient through the trials I may face. I encourage you to do the same because you’re worth it no matter what people say or how hard life is hitting you right now. You are not your mistakes and you are important. Don’t forget. Trust me I have to remind myself every day.

Top 5 Makeup Staples

Makeup is another passion of mine besides being active and writing. I have a makeup collection that is organized similar to a beauty blogger and am a Rouge member at Sephora. So today I want to put on my beauty blogger hat and share my top 5 makeup staples.

Foundation

I have a variety of foundations to fit my mood for any occasion or day. Finding the perfect foundation is rough and takes a lot of trial and error. Some of my favorite foundations are:

  • Nars Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation in Macao
  • Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation SPF 15 in Warm Almond
  • Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’ R in 420 (soft matte)
  • Bobbi Brown BB Cream SPF 35 in Dark

These are my go tos because they give me great coverage and last all day regardless of if I wear a primer or not.

Contour Kit

I absolutely love to contour. I have a couple contour sticks that I love, but none of them beat my Smashbox Contour Palette in Medium/Dark. I can’t get enough of this palette especially the terracotta bronzer. It is the perfect shade for dark skin and it even comes with step-by-step instructions for those just starting out. I use this kit every time I put on makeup even if I tell myself I’m not going to go all out I somehow gravitate toward the bronzer every time.

Highlighter

Having a glow is my signature look. I wouldn’t be me without a shimmer on my cheeks. I try to tone it down, but I can’t go without the shine. Some of my favorite brands to get my highlighters from are:

  • Kylie Cosmetics
  • Huda Beauty
  • Becca
  • Anastasia Beverly Hills

Lipstick

I am so a lipstick kind of girl. If I don’t have anything else on, but want a little makeup on then lipstick is my go to. I love a matte lip and am obsessed with the Kylie Cosmetic Lip Kits for that matte look. I use numerous kinds and finishes of lipsticks, but matte and Kylie Cosmetics are my favorites. The next would have to be Kat Von D.

Mascara

Four Words…Better Than Sex Mascara. As risque as the name is, the Better Than Sex Mascara by Too Faced Cosmetics is my absolute favorite mascara of all time. I also like the Maybelline Great Lash for a more natural look and the L’oreal Voluminous Million Lashes for that false lash effect at a reasonable price. But back to the Better Than Sex. It gives me that long false lash look that I like without overdoing it. It lasts for a long time so you’re getting your monies worth and throughout the day so your look looks as fresh as it did before you left. Mascara is a must for any makeup look to bring out your eyes and finish the look.

I could go all day about all my makeup favorites and collection, but these are the top five that I must have with me anytime I want to make up my face. I enjoy playing around in makeup and trying new looks, but it’s also nice to have a go-to look when you don’t want to really think about your look in too much depth. I hope you guys check out some of the brands I mentioned and get why I love them so much. Tell me about your favorite makeup brands in the comments and your staples you can’t live without!

Buy or Bye: KKW x Kylie Round 2 Collection

You guys know makeup and coffee are my weakness and the keys to my material heart. Well, this Black Friday I couldn’t resist because Kylie Jenner came out with another lip collection! Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner have done it again by coming out with KKW x Kylie Round 2 Collection. After I saw the swatches I knew I had to pick one up for myself.

This lip collection comes with four beautiful shades with an amazing formula to match. They range from a dark hue to light and perfect for every skin tone! I was so impressed by the warm undertones these shades have so they didn’t come off ashy looking on my lips. Major key! Since these shades don’t come with a liner, I lined my lips with a universal liner from Sephora before putting them on, however, you can use whatever you want. But let’s look at them a little closer shall we?

Double Trouble

This is my favorite shade out of all of them. Double Trouble is a red chestnut bold matte lip that won’t disappoint. I loved the formula being creamy, and lightweight on the lips. I’ve never had a matte lipstick that didn’t make my lips feel dry, but now that is no more. It also is long lasting! I was able to eat and drink for hours before having to apply it again. I put it on around 7 AM and didn’t reapply it until about 5 PM that same day. It’s a great shade for women with darker skin tones like myself. Here’s how it looks on me:

Soul Sister

Soul Sister is another goody. This brick red matte lip is perfect for that classic red lip but toned-down because it’s on the darker side. Again the formula is amazing! It lasted all day through eating and drinking from 5 AM to 4 PM. The color also complimented my skin tone, as well as the others. I absolutely love the matte lip look! This is what it looks like on:

Twinning

Twinning is a rosy terracotta shade that is perfect for every day. I like how it is one of her velvet formulas, but still gives you the matte look that I love! It does transfer a little, but that doesn’t affect how the color lasts all day through eating and drinking. The formula is smooth and creamy. I like that it isn’t sticky and feels light on the lips while still being very pigmented. I like that it doesn’t look ashy on my dark skin too! That’s really hard to find with lighter nude like shades, but this one hits the nail on the head. This is how the shade looks on me:

Side Note: I used her burgundy palette on my eyes!

Main Bae

Main Bae is a bronzed copper shade that goes on silky smooth and not gritty despite the flakes. Out of the four, this one transfers the most and you’ll have to reapply it often like you would with any gloss. That doesn’t deter it from being an awesome and wearable color. I really love the formula it is super moisturizing and the applicator is sturdy making it easy to apply. I can appreciate the thought that went into making this product. This is how it looks on yours truly:

Buy or Bye: The Verdict

So now the question is, is this a buy or bye? I personally feel this is a huge buy! From the formula to the color selection is good enough for me. Kylie and Kim did an excellent job creating shades that are suitable for a variety of skin tones while making a lasting, and moisturizing formula to match.

These products are high quality and worth every penny. I enjoyed using these lip shades to compliment my various looks throughout the week and will definitely use them from now on. I’m satisfied with my purchase and am glad that I did take the plunge.

The Best Way to Get Omega-3 Without Eating Fish | Health & Fitness

If you’re anything like me, you want to get your nutrition from different types of methods and foods. If not you’ll get bored and your health will wane. To keep me in tip-top shape and not getting tired of fish, I eat Chia Seeds. I like to add them to oatmeal or my smoothies as a quick way to gain omega-3.

About Chia Seeds

Chia seeds are part of the mint family and come from the desert plant, Salvia Hispanica. They are believed to have come from the Central America region and were part of the Aztec’s diets. Today this tiny seed is used for many nutritional benefits and can be easily added to pudding, oatmeal, smoothies, and even pancakes! But, you can use your creative juices or google to find out how else to make chia seeds part of your healthy treat.

The Benefits

Chia seeds have so many great benefits it’s hard to name all of them. For starters, Chia seeds raise good cholesterol also known as HDL. I have personally had to fight against high cholesterol for years even as petite as I am. I don’t know if Chia seeds are to thank, but I do try to consume them a couple of times a month, and my cholesterol is finally healthy.

If you have digestive problems, chia seeds can help with that too! That is because it has the right amount of fiber that will keep you regulated and feeling good.

These seeds are also useful for naturally regulating your blood sugar. Now, I’m not saying stop taking insulin if you’re a diabetic, but I am saying if you’re a non-diabetic whom occasionally has a drop in their sugar, chia seeds can be useful to keep your blood sugar at a healthy level.

Are Chia Seeds Cost Effective?

You can get chia seeds for as cheap as $4 or as expensive as $20. It all depends on how much you get and the brand.

Chia seeds may not be a complete alternative for fish, but they can be a great addition especially if fish isn’t your thing. I love chia seeds since they are an easy addition to any food or drink. Being high in Omega-3 makes them a great healthy option to include in your diet.

Reflection | Why I Started Blogging

I don’t know if any of you ever wonder or even care why, but I thought it would be a good idea to share with y’all why I started blogging. Honestly, there are a million reasons I can think of, but today I’ll just go over these top five.

Journalism Major

The first reason is that I was made for this! I was a journalism major when I was doing my undergraduate studies at the University of North Texas. An interesting thing about that is that I actually didn’t start off as a journalism major but was a marketing major. I toyed with the idea before I applied and ended up going against it for whatever reasoning I had at the time.

I quickly had a change of heart after my first semester of having to take dreadful accounting. I’m hoping that once I start making enough money I can just hire someone or find really good software to do the accounting portion of the business for me because I definitely don’t enjoy it.

I honestly only barely passed that class by God’s grace and nothing else! Like the greats have said, “stick to your day job and what you know.” I plan to definitely take this advice to heart and execute it with pride!

Career Change – Freelance Writer

As you may know, if you’ve read my perfectionism issue blog post, I used to be an auto claims adjuster. Although at times I really enjoyed the job and enjoyed working with the people in the office it had serious drawbacks.

Claims handling has to be one of the most stressful jobs you can ever have and I give mad props to anyone who can stick it out and do it with grace and ease, but I couldn’t. Essentially with all the negativity I eventually snapped and let’s just leave it at that so I wanted a serious change.

Not only for my peace of mind but my overall health. I had gotten to 98 pounds, but I digress. What better change would there have been knowing my background than to go into freelance for writing!?

I’m still starting out, but the main goal out of this career change is to become a freelance writer and have my own business all the while being involved in Children’s Ministry and counseling to kiddos. However, I’ll talk about what being successful in this looks like for me another day and more about my graduate studies.

Not New to Blogging – Tumblr

What do you know, I’ve done blogging before on a less professional scale. I used to have a Tumblr back in grade school that I would just write and reblog things on. I’ve completely forgotten what my username was and that page has long since been taken down, but I say all this to say I’m not a spring chicken to having a blog.

Now the other aspects of blogging like making money out of it I’m definitely new to, but I’m so, so excited to learn and develop as a writer and hardworking professional.

Passion for The Art

I wouldn’t be a writer if I didn’t have a passion for something! My passion happens to include just the very act of writing whether that be writing an article like this one, writing in my journal offline or writing poetry; I love to do it all! Ever since I was a little girl I had a niche for writing. I would always score the highest in English and well like I said, I ended up graduating college with a journalism degree. I love writing and writing seems to love me.

Hobbies

So let’s say I don’t end up making this a career and just stick with what I’m studying now in graduate school, Children’s Ministry and counseling. Well, this will still be a great hobby to have. I love talking to Y’all and sharing my life whether that be my thoughts or literally what I’ve been up to it doesn’t matter again I love it all.

This is so therapeutic for me that it really doesn’t matter how much I make doing it I”m just happy to be doing it. I know you could have read any blog on WordPress or the Internet, yet you’re reading mine so for that I’ll be forever grateful and thankful.

Conclusion

Well, there you have it. Those are my reasons for starting Food for thought by Paige Redwine. I still have a ways to go, but I feel with my dedication and your faithful reading we can make this great and enjoyable for us both!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read and I hope you find it in your interest to come back and read more soon! I try to post at least 2 to 3 times a week if not more. Also if you blog, comment on why you started blogging or if you don’t, why you don’t do it. Either way, I want to know 🙂

Health & Fitness | The Chronicles of Anxiety Part 1

Y’all, I’m going to be super honest. My anxiety has been through the roof & the worst part is I can’t seem to find my medicine so what is there for me to do? Today I’m going to share some simple yet effective tips on how I’m making due without my old friend Klonopin (that is prescribed and not misused).

1. Watch what I eat

I have noticed that when I eat right or at least less processed foods my anxiety starts to decrease. I feel more energized and more comfortable. Yay! So eat your fruits and vegetables and whatever else is on the food pyramid that balance is good for you or at least it is for me! This doesn’t mean I don’t eat junk food, but it means I can tell when I’m eating a little too much of it. Also, drink plenty of water!

2. Exercise

I love to take out in a sprint when I have anxiety it raises your heart rate to where I forget I was anxious and of course releases endorphins that help me feel good and turn the anxiousness down. You can do any exercise you want though. At times I just take a walk or maybe a brisk walk if I don’t feel like running and guess what; it still works!

3. Deep breathing

My Apple Watch (series 3) is a champ at reminding me to do this. Breathing deeply helps you focus on something else and allows you to catch a breath. It also helps that my apple watch will show me what my heart rate is and keep track of my breathing throughout the day and I can turn this off when I want too. (Promise this is not sponsored)

4. Write

You don’t have to post it anywhere, but just writing your thoughts and feelings down can really help you get more in touch with yourself and ease your pain I mean anxiety. I always have a pen and paper or my notes open on hand so I can quickly jot down whatever and wherever I’m at, at that very moment. Use your tools! It doesn’t have to be a perfect moleskin, it can be anything! Just write!

5. Spend time doing fun things with those closest to me

This does the trick most of the time! Spending time with my best friends and family gets my mind off of myself and into the moment. For instance, this past Saturday Nicah and I bartended at a house party and the whole time I was in the moment just hanging out with her and making drinks for the party goers it didn’t dawn on me that I didn’t have my anxiety medicine or feel anxious. Get outside of yourself because sometimes being alone and getting deep in thought can make it worse if you haven’t gotten the tools down to handle it just yet. I haven’t so I know I need to have some social time, some deep breathing and all the other good things I’ve listed above. Please don’t isolate yourself!

6. Rest

Now this tip here is a major key! I don’t mean just sitting down I mean getting that sleep in Y’all! You need to really go to sleep and if you can’t try a natural substance like melatonin to help. I’ve added a link to it so you can read more about the great benefits and even side effects, but don’t let it freak you out that defeats the purpose. I take it only at times my anxiety is super high and I know I didn’t sleep well the night before because too much of a good thing is a bad thing. If you can get to sleep and a deep sleep at that without it then that is great! Keep up whatever you are doing and sleep, sleep, sleep!

Okay, rant is over and I hope these tips help you ease your anxiety like it does for me! Let me know if you try any of these tips or have in the past. Did it work? Did it not? I want to know 🙂 (Also this post is not sponsored I just put in links in case you want to check them out)

Reflection | Words Have Power

I’ve been thinking a lot about words. Whether it is for poetry, my diary or even this blog. They are so so powerful and I feel as though I have been reckless with what I have said or even written. My church had a prayer breakfast and the topic was about effective prayer, but then the amazing speaker started talking about gossiping as well. I felt so convicted although I never mean to gossip I find myself falling a victim to it. She also talked about not telling all of your business and well obviously with writing a lifestyle blog and trying to be as open and honest as possible I fail to do that too to some extent. However, I started thinking that maybe telling your business isn’t always a bad thing because a lot of times other’s stories help me so why can’t my story possibly help someone else.

I’ll be honest. Right now I feel like even though I’m trying so hard to change I can’t do it. Don’t get me wrong I can definitely change and be healed through Christ, but that’s the thing I haven’t been completely leaning on the LORD and that’s why I feel so terrible right now. I thought I was better and I am physically, but emotionally and spiritually I am drained. Mostly because of the decisions I chose to make, and there is genuine regret. The first step to healing is asking for forgiveness and I’ve done that. The second step is forgiving myself and I’m trying to get better at that.

The Holy Spirit has been so powerful this weekend. He made me humble myself and do things that I never thought I would do and I had fun doing it. Just stepping outside of your comfort zone just opens up a whole new world of opportunities that I would have regretted not taking before because of pride. He knows that my heart is heavy and I am finally ready to let him deliver me. Whoever he brings to give me the help I will say “Yes Please” and be grateful as well as glad about it. There is no shame in your game to need help and to ask for it. I’ve had to learn that the hard way, but you don’t have to do the same. I can already see God working on my frustrations and giving me rest and although things aren’t perfect I can still genuinely praise him no matter who is looking or who is saying what because they have no power over me anymore. I am so glad we serve a living God that will cast our sins as far as the east is from the west and gave his only begotten son to die for our sins. I have accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior and I hope that you do too because it is never too late. He’s ready for you to just let him in and experience his grace and mercy just like I do; a sinner like me. I’m so glad I can talk to the Lord about anything myself and don’t have to go through anyone or anything else and he hears my cry and my call. The best part is he answers me and I know he will answer you too. Have a Blessed day!

Foodie Finds | Sushi Box

Yesterday, I had the best time with one of my best friends, Nicah (Who is also an amazing photographer!). Every time we’re together we like to dine, and this time we picked somewhere new (shout out to Google)! Sushi Box is a sushi place located in Rockwall, TX and I highly recommend them to anyone that wants a new place to eat at or is visiting and loves some good sushi. It also helped that the waitress was nice and attentive and the whole place was spotless. I tried the tiger roll and Nicah had the rainbow roll which she also said was amazing!
